Ford company vehicles has begun working on the creation of a new autonomous vehicle. The novelty of this project is not only the product but the fact that, together with Ford, there’re four startups working that bring their knowledge and skills for their development. The car took by name SAE 4 and is expected to hit the market in 2021.
This new car will not move the driver in concept, it just bring the design wheel and pedals to take the option of driving manually. Ford president Mark Fields, thanked for the participation of startup collaborating on this new innovation.
Statements about the project
"The next decade will be marked by automating the car and we’ll see how autonomous vehicles will have an important impact on our society, as it did over 100 years ago the mass production of Ford," said Mark Fields, president of Ford.
To achieve this success, Ford will triple its fleet of autonomous Fusion Hybrid cars on the road in California, Arizona and Michigan. The strategy is to tripling the model number of vehicles in these roads to begin selling the idea of autonomous cars to the public.
Startups and their functions
The first collaborator is Velodyne, a company in which 130 million euros was invested to be the leading manufacturing company on LIDAR sensors. The next startup is SAIPS, which has headquarters in Israel and specializes in artificial intelligence and computer vision vehicle. The third is Nirenberg Neuroscience LLC. It was founded by Dr. Sheila Nirenberg, and it discovered the neurological code that uses the human eye to encode and transmit visual information to the brain. Finally we have Civil Maps, which is known for being the pioneer in 3D mapping, which is classified as the most efficient of the entire market.
The leading manufacturer will expand its facilities for the creation and study of the vehicle at the Palo Alto campus. At the same place, two new buildings will be built to research and develop the autonomous vehicle model. It is expected that with this increase and help from different companies, they can bring this car in the market in 2021. It is the goal of Ford, and it’s expect to be able to fulfill 100%.
