Freedom of speech – Internet

Toxic people are simply everywhere, you cannot hide them neither ignore them completely so it is almost inevitable having to deal with them at some point. Since we create technology and virtual reality in an attempt to “improve” our own, and pose as an alternative to what we already have, then it does not come as a surprise when at some point of the evolution of internet we got bullying in the form of cyber bullying.

Also commonly named as “trolling” – remote harassment, this annoying behavior with no apparent reason has really become such a problem for the modern society and the situation doesn’t get any better with time or so experts says looking ahead into how we interact within communities of any nature (that interact through internet).

Right now it seems that freedom of speech that is inherited for everyone on the internet (unless a website or chat forbids it according to their policies) is on peril. And that is a topic of polemic status because dealing with trolling might be a good things but it is also a way of giving too much importance to people opinions on social media, it is impossible to control what other people think about something from the core of thought, nor is easy to predict a person’s reaction to it from a computer without looking him or her in the face… so how can you stop people from giving their opinion in the way they want? Auto banning someone who gives pure destructive comments about someone else could be something doable and acceptable, but there are plenty of ideas that just seem as a way to control people’s freedom of speech rather than just aiding in a social issue.

What happens online is the same that happens offline in real life, except that is in many ways less harmless than the former. The deal is that given the importance of social media in our current model of society then from children to adults, bullying can be present through our whole life by different kind of characters wherever is on Facebook, the cafeteria, Instagram, our work place, Twitter, or university.

Is society too restricted?

If you are a citizen of the U.S or not, you know that this country has so many rules that the concept of freedom might be under too much objections to actually be precisely true, so as secured as it may appear there are many situations that escape out of hand of the government, and that is the trolling and bullying issue.

The possibility of legalizing a policy to arrest or put silence to a person who bad mouthed somebody on the internet might be too much but it can certainly become true, maybe not today or tomorrow but in the future.

Can you imagine having to pay a price for the will of free speech in the internet?

There is obviously a problem with cyber bullying but not all cases, actually few cases require such punishment as an automated “mute mode” for example and banning from internet use.

The U.S government and any other who is working on policies such as this idea should be considering other kind of solution since you can’t simply claim the word “freedom” and then put it the old chain and ball around its foot.
